Independently published #ad - Beekeepers often have the idea that bees in top bar hives and sustainable beekeeping etc, mean that they can be more or less left alone to get on with things unaided. Whilst there are many types of hives in which bees can be kept just using top bars, Joe concentrates on the Warre hive, smaller than conventional hives, which allows for the construction of eight combs in each box, this being composed of a series of boxes, and the Horizontal Hive which usually has enough room for twenty combs.

Before going into any management details, joe gives the reader the main information which is needed as regards the natural history and development of the colony, and throughout the book there are listed typical management tasks which a beekeeper needs to carry out over the year, but in each case his advice and practical instructions are geared to top bar hives.

Joe gives a realistic appraisal of the differences between Warre and Horizontal hives, including the drawbacks inherent in each system. Joe bleasdale's new book is a simple and straightforward guide, ideal for both beginners to beekeeping and those new to wanting to manage their bees for the first time using top bar hives.

Care of Bees in Warré & Top Bar Hives #ad - Illustrated with line drawings and colour photographs. Joe firmly dispels this and shows that various interactions between the beekeeper and the colony are needed in order for honey to be harvested the main goal of beekeeping and to prevent the issue of swarms which can become a nuisance to neighbours. A very, very important message in the book is that bees are able to deal with varroa if they are given the chance to do so.

For those who have frame hives, dadant, such as the Langstroth, Segeberger Beute, Frankenbeute, British National, Flow Hive: see my book "Care of Bees in Frame Hives".

Chelsea Green Publishing #ad - Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a topbar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

Top-bar beekeeping provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. In recent years beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests such as varroa and tracheal mites and from the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder CCD.

All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book.

Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, miticides, even without antibiotics, bees are being raised successfully, or other chemical inputs. More and more organically minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Used book in Good Condition.
